Pakistan: Young Doctor’s Association Wins the Battle

Young Doctors Association (YDA) Sindh is engaged in a strugglefor the rights of doctors. For three months the YDA has issued press statements regarding their problems of salary increment as well as protesting time and again. But the ruling elite and concerned authorities continue to show indifference to the problems of doctors and the masses in general. There is massive unemployment, poverty, hunger, load shedding and target killing. All this has reflected itself in the form of demonstrations, processions and strikes as the whole of society is crying out for change in the present situation, which has become intolerable for people.

may_2011-3After receiving no response to their protests the YDAcalled emergency meetings throughout Sindh, where a decision to boycott the out patient departments was taken. On 16th May doctors stopped working in out patient departments throughout Sindh. They gathered outside and held demonstrations where speeches were made by representatives.

In Hyderabad the boycott received a wider echo with paramedic unions supporting the struggle and taking active part in the demonstration.Doctors demanded the nationalization of the health sector and condemned the privatization policy. Radical speeches were made by Dr Haresh (press secretary of YDA), Dr Sindhoo and Dr Asad Nadeem. They condemned the indifference of the authorities and demanded an immediate solution of their problems so that patients would not suffer. may_2011-4They talked about the price hike and shortage of medicine in the hospitals. Comrade Haresh explained the general crisis of system and need for collective struggle with workers and other oppressed layers of society to overthrow the capitalism.

may_2011-1On 17th May, after the out patient boycott, representatives of the YDA held meetings with trade unions, federations, political parties to gain their support for the struggle. PTUDC, BNT, Railway Mahnat Kash union, Pakistan Paramedical Union, Peoples Paramedical Union, Sindh Paramedical Union, Mehran Mazdoor Union, left unity, nationalist parties and left groups all supported the strike of doctors and issued press releases in their favour. A joint protest was scheduled for 23rd May.

Momentum built as the strike entered the third day and the authorities could not withstand the growing pressure of the strike, which was getting massive support. Provincial representatives of the YDA were contacted by the finance minister who asked them for a meeting at which all the YDA’s demands were accepted verbally. After the meeting the General Council of the YDA decided to call off the strike till the notification of acceptance of demands was issued.

may_2011-2Despite this succes there are certain weaknesses which must be highlighted. There is no traditional organization of doctors in Sindh and this is first time that doctors have been united in such a fashion by the YDA. Inexperience compelled them to call off the strike, and this move was resisted by some of the comrades who are getting support in rank and files of doctors. As the authorities cannot be trusted sooner or later there will be another strike and the role of comrades in it will be crucial in providing a consistent Marxist perspective.
