Vienna: Rally in solidarity with the Egyptian Revolution

In solidarity with the “march of millions” in Egypt a very loud and militant rally also took place in front of the Egyptian embassy in Vienna.

As in Cairo and in many other cities in Egypt where millions were on the street, the protesters in Vienna demanded the resignation of the hated dictator Hosni Mubarak. More than 350 people, young and old, men and women, turned up to express their opposition to the regime in Egypt. Many of them originally came from Egypt and now live and work in Vienna. For hours they sang their songs and chanted their slogans such as, “Down with the dictatorship!”, “Down with Mubarak!” and “Freedom for the people in Egypt!”

The mood was electrifying and full of enthusiasm about the courageous mass protests in Egypt. One could feel that the resentment built up in decades of oppression cannot be stopped anymore. And it now also found its expression on the streets of Vienna. A revolution knows no frontiers and also the people living here (many of them were born in Austria) feel that they are part of this revolution which is going on in Egypt.

Already last week two smaller rallies were held in Vienna. The comrades of “Der Funke” were present at all of them, handed out the Arabic language leaflet of the IMT in solidarity with the revolution in the Arab world and also our new issue of the paper with an article on Tunisia on the front page sold very well.

We will continue our solidarity activities in the coming weeks, working together with comrades from the Arab community in Vienna. On February 15 we are also organising a public meeting where left-wing Tunisian and Egyptian activists will speak.
