Yesterday, September 20, there was a very good response to the appeal sent out by the Iranian Workers’ Solidarity Network to organise protest pickets outside the Iranian embassies. We are here providing the reports of the different pickets. The day of action was organised in support of the seven worker activists facing trial in Saghez, and undoubtedly embarrassed the Iranian diplomatic authorities, who are busy trying to portray the Iranian regime as one that respects basic human rights.

Further to yesterday’s reports on the day of action in solidarity with Iranian workers, we have received more from Mexico and Pakistan. In Mexico City there was a lively picket, but the embassy officials proved less civilised than in other parts of the world. One of them attacked a female comrade! The Iranian embassy in Islamabad, on the other hand, had the delightful experience of being visited by a group of protesting MPs!

After Mahmoud Salehi’s trial was postponed on September 23 other Saghez workers are encountering the same response from the regime. This is clearly a delaying tactic. The Iranian authorities are most likely waiting for things to calm down before continuing with the trials. We must be vigilant and be prepared to mobilise again if they move against these workers.

Esmail Mohamadi is a political prisoner held in the Iranian jail of Oromiyeh awaiting execution. Now the final stage of his trial and execution are imminent, so please add your protest to the petition to Kofi Annan.
