Multan, October 14, 2001
Today, 14 October 2001, in Multan (the biggest city of the Southern Punjab, Pakistan) a meeting was organised by the Multan PTUDC, at the Press Club. About 150 trade union workers, students, PPP workers and women attended the meeting. The topic was “Only the class struggle can decisively defeat the madness of fundamentalist terrorism and imperialist barbarism”.
The speakers condemned both and said that this is not a war of "civilisation versus religion", this is a war between “Black and White money”. [Editor’s note: By this what is meant is that the fundamentalists base themselves on the so-called illegal “black” sector of the economy, dealing mainly in drug running, the legal “white” sector being that of the more traditional bourgeoisie]. The inner contradictions of global finance capital are being exposed through this phenomenon of barbarism and terrorism of the modern age. They said that fundamentalism and capitalism are two sides of same coin. Their so-called war is not against each other. They are both fighting against the present and future of humankind and of the whole planet. They explained that US imperialism is not only attacking Afghanistan, which has already been destroyed several times over. It is also attacking its own working class. More than 300,000 workers have lost their jobs since 11 September.
The meeting unanimously adopted a resolution against this brutal attack of the US bosses against their own working class (the workers in the USA), and demanded the reinstatement of all workers who had been sacked. They also condemned the terrorism organised by the Islamic fundamentalists. They said all of these acts of terrorism and barbarism are a real danger to the whole planet and all of humanity. The lust for ever more profits has destroyed the "technology of life" and replaced it with the "technology of death". Today they are producing scientists who work on the development of new techniques of death and they are investing everything to gain huge profits from this. The real ugly face of old and new civilisations is now exposed to the entire world. But now the working class youth of the whole world is beginning to understand what is going on, who is doing what and how.
This meeting was a major breakthrough in the development of leftwing activities in this important city of Pakistan.
