Bankruptcy threatens Greece: Let’s sacrifice capitalism!

Written by Stamatis Karayiannopoulos in Athens Wednesday, 24 February 2010

Bankruptcy threatens Greece: Let’s sacrifice capitalism! What should a genuine socialist government do in the face of the severe economic and financial crisis that has hit Greece? The only real answer is a socialist programme based on the nationalisation of the banks and the commanding heights of the economy. There is no other way out. [This article was published in the latest issue of the Greek Marxist paper Marxistiki Foni, Marxist Voice, of the Marxists inside the Synaspismos party.]

Marx versus Bakunin - Part Two

Written by Alan Woods Monday, 22 February 2010

Marx versus Bakunin - Part TwoThe Paris Commune put to the test the different currents inside the First International. Its subsequent defeat created an atmosphere where all kinds of demoralised elements thrived. Intrigue was on the order of the day. This led to a questioning of centralised leadership, of the very role of the leadership. Marx and Engels answered all this fully.

The International faces state repression: Report of the General Council to the Fifth Annual Congress of the IWA held at the Hague

Written by Karl Marx in 1872 Monday, 22 February 2010

The Franco-German War and the Civil War in France were preceded, accompanied, and followed by a third war - the war against the International Working Men's Association. Following the defeat of the Paris Commune, the International was faced with a concerted onslaught of reaction, aggravated by the internal intrigues by both the anarchists and the agents of the state.

Engels on Bakunin (Letter to Theodore Cuno, January 24, 1872)

Written by Friedrich Engels Monday, 22 February 2010

Bakunin wanted the International to be, not an organization for political struggle but a copy of the ideal society of the future, with no leaders and no authority, for authority = state = an absolute evil. The authority of the majority over the minority also ceases. Every individual and every community is autonomous. But as to how is any society to function, unless each gives up some of his, or her, autonomy?

Shays’ Rebellion and the American Revolution

Written by John Peterson in the U.S. Thursday, 18 February 2010

Shays’ Rebellion and the American RevolutionThe American Revolution shook up the entire world. The thirteen British colonies that would become the United States of America, fought and won against the most powerful imperial power on the planet. In the years following the American victory over the British, the hopes of the masses were betrayed. As a result, there were many popular movements and uprisings. But none had as big an impact on the psychology of the ruling class and the future structure of the U.S. government as Shays’ Rebellion of 1786-87, which some have called “The American Revolution’s Final Battle.”

Part of the intention of this article is to combat the kind of senseless anti-Americanism that one encounters all too frequently in left circles. Only by such means can we build the revolutionary movement urgently needed to prevent a further descent into sectarian chaos and achie... Read More
