Afghanistan: Taliban Resurgent - Kandahar prison-break shows NATO occupation is fanning the flames of insurgency

On June 13th, Taliban fighters launched a large-scale raid on Kandahar prison. Nearly 1,200 prisoners, including 400 Taliban insurgents, were freed. Taliban forces then captured 7 towns and villages in the Arghandab region of Kandahar province. Although NATO forces subsequently regained control, these events highlight the real situation in Afghanistan, one where the Taliban are getting stronger, not weaker.
 
Terry Fields, Militant MP dies – the workers’ MP on a workers’ wage

We have just received the sad news of the death of Terry Fields, a Militant supporter and Labour MP for Liverpool Broadgreen (1983 -92). He died over the weekend after a long struggle with cancer. Terry is remembered by all the comrades who knew him as a true class fighter and a man who stuck to his socialist principles throughout.

The Venezuelan speaking tour of Alan Woods has now moved to the West of the country, kicking off at PDVSA in Zulia. Around 200 workers and revolutionary activists from Cabimas, Maracaibo and Ciudad Ojeda turned up and gave Alan a very warm and enthusiastic welcome. And again, all books, pamphlets and books were sold out.

A few days ago a meeting of 60 people from different left groups gathered to hear speakers from the IMT explain the ideas of Marxism and several requested a follow up to this with a programme of political education for trade union members and youth.

In January 1949 Ted Grant analysed the historical significance of the victory of Mao in China. Key to this victory was Mao's agrarian reform which won over the peasants while the feudal landlords and capitalists clung to the rotten Kuomintang. The Chinese revolution was second in importance only to the Russian October, but with one important difference: from day one the Chinese masses were expropriated of their political power by the Stalinist bureaucracy. Two weeks after a new contract in which GM bosses promised no more layoffs and no more plant closures until 2011, in exchange for a wage freeze and other concessions, they have now announced closure! The profit motive is stronger than any rotten deal the union tops can broker with the bosses and they are prepared to break the law to do so. Workers will be drawing some bitter lessons from this experience.

British capitalism is in big trouble. The official annual inflation rate has hit 3.3%, its highest level for 16 years. The governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King, has been forced to send a letter to the Chancellor of Exchequer, Alastair Darling, to explain why the Bank has been unable to keep inflation from rising at more than 2%, which is the target set by the government for the Bank.

The launch of the book Reformism or Revolution, Marxism and Socialism of the 21st Centuy (a reply to Heinz Dieterich) took place on June 21, at the Art Gallery of the Regional Legislature of Anzoategui, in Barcelona, in the presence of 90 workers, youth and community leaders. Alan Woods expressed concern that the delay in the revolution was already producing signs of apathy and disillusionment in the Bolivarian rank and file.

Viernes 20 de junio Potosí fue teatro de una ofensiva violenta del empresariado minero. Unos 700 cooperativistas mineros - incitados por concesionarios de minas y dueños de ingenios mineros - destruyeron totalmente el edificio de Impuestos Nacionales, tomaron la Alcaldía y la Prefectura en la central Plaza 10 de Noviembre y bombardearon con dinamita la Corte Departamental Electoral y la Radio Kollasuyo.
