The magnificent wave of industrial action in
Egypt, which started over a year ago, is continuing. And it continues to be
ignored by the media. Price rises are the central focus of protest. But in a
very important development, at the Ghazl al Mahalla textile company have
raised political demands for the first time.

A debate in the British Parliament on the nationalisation of
Northern Rock, involving John McDonnell MP, has revealed that billions of
pounds are to be diverted away from the intended purpose of preventing a banking
collapse, into the pockets of the Rock's management. It seems the directors of
Northern Rock had set up a financial institution called Granite, the real
purpose of which was to carry out tax evasion!

Most reviews of "Disaster capitalism" so far
have focussed on the use of natural disasters to change policies in favour of
the capitalists. But the book goes much further than this - it shows that it is
capitalism itself which is the disaster.

can it be undone?", written by Ranabir Samaddar. He gives a positive appraisal
of the book and asks a pertinent question at the end: "But are the official
communists listening to all these?"

Lukács was an important influence on what is called 'western Marxism'.
This was seen as a 'humanist' alternative to the dominant stalinist
orthodoxy of the inter-War period and later. One of Lukács' most
significant arguments was that (contrary to Engels) there can be no
dialectics of nature. Dan Morley examines the debate and goes into the
contradictory relationship between Lukács' interpretation of Marxism and
Stalinism.

There has been a lot of media hype about the big rally
in Belgrade
last week after the announcement that Kosovo had declared its "independence".
But the real mood in Serbia,
especially among the working class, is very different. There are indications
that the workers are tired of the nationalism and chauvinism being pumped out
by the Serbian bourgeoisie and in particular are fed up with all the bourgeois
parties. What is missing a political expression of the working class.

Obama may
well end up being the official Democratic candidate in the US Presidential
elections. But what kind of an alternative is he? Luiz Bicalho, a leading
member of Esquerda Marxista in Brazil,
explains that Obama promises many things but remains a defender of capitalism.
The answer is not Obama. The answer is an independent party of the US working
class fighting to change society.

a check on the corruption of the bureaucratic caste without restoring real

This year, for the first time one of Trotsky's key works, the Revolution
Betrayed, was presented by the Frederick Engels Foundation at the Havana
Book Fair, stimulating big interest. A special edition of a theoretical
magazine on China,
including the analysis of the International Marxist Tendency on this subject
was also being sold. It is clear that a layer of the most conscious workers and
youth in Cuba
are looking far a Marxist alternative to the prospect of "market economics"
being reintroduced to the island.
