Yesterday workers all over the world were celebrating May Day. The general mood reflected the sharpening class contradictions and anger against capitalist misery, but also against the bureaucracy of the labour movement. Here we are publishing reports of our supporters from the USA, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, Britain and Spain (in Spanish).

After the first few months of war in March 1940,
preparations for an even worse scenario of slaughter were being undertaken by
all imperialist powers by mobilizing the masses of each country against the
"enemy". The labour and Stalinist leaders' bankrupt policies left the workers
unarmed. Here Ted Grant makes a balance-sheet of the first months of War.

The immediate cause of the sliding dollar
is not far to seek. It’s the US
deficit with the rest of the world. Last year the USA imported nearly twice as much
as it exported. Their current account deficit stands at 6% of national income.
If a country is spending more than it’s earning, then it has to pay for the
difference.

The capitalist system, which has been lowering the living conditions of the working class during the last 15 to 20 years of boom has now entered a slump, which will make the situation of the toiling masses even worse. The struggle against this system can only be waged with a programme, ideology, and strategy of completely changing the system. This is the message of May Day 2008.

In looking back at
the Good Friday Agreement, Gerry Ruddy points out that it has served to
stabilise British rule in the North as Sinn Fein has been absorbed into the
establishment. In this situation he stresses the need for republican socialists
to focus on working class and socialist policies.

Mick Brooks questions the method applied in the four-part
article by Brian Baker published this week. Brian Baker's article does not
proceed from a Marxist framework. It tries to show that human activity has no
part in climate change. Environmental problems such as climate change are
inevitable under capitalism and that what is required is a world socialist plan
that takes account of all the costs and benefits of human economic activity.

In part three Brian Baker in answering the question
"Is the planet warming?" states that "The short answer
is yes" but his opinion is that this "is most probably
from the little ice age, but nothing dramatic."
Different methods produce different results, therefore
one has to take great care in using as scientific and
objective a method as possible. Are these statements
valid points? We invite our readers to comment.

14 students at UofT, including Canadian Marxists active with Fightback, have been arrested on false charges for fighting for free education. The charges include assaulting a police officer and forcible confinement, which could lead to serious jail time. The University is trying to crush this movement under repression before it takes off. Solidarity action is needed now!

So what drives the Climate? The real answer is no one knows.
There are theories in abundance, computer simulations by the score. But as
Gershwin described the Mississipi "It just goes on trundling along." Before
attempting to answer the question it is probably worth reviewing the
limitations of computer modelling.

The oligarchy in Bolivia has launched a major
challenge to the Evo Morales government in the form of a referendum on an
"Autonomous Statute" in the Eastern Department of Santa Cruz. They are using
this question to mobilise the forces of counter-revolution. Morales must stop
dithering and take firm action.

We start today a serialised article on Global Warming, written by one of our
readers who challenges the scientific basis upon which the theory of
human-caused climate change is based. He gives detailed facts and figures which
point out the flaws in the dominant, mainstream theory within the "scientific"
community. He maintains that global warming cannot be proved so we are left to
accept "a belief system" and at the same time abandon the scientific method. We
publish this article as a discussion document that we hope will stimulate
serious debate on the issue.

Recently there was a protest in Tel Aviv - of both Jews and Arabs -
against a reunion of Etzel, one of the terrorist Zionist groups used against
the Arab population in the process of the formation of the state of Israel. In the
"only democracy in the Middle East" these
peaceful demonstrators were brutally manhandled by the police.

Inflation in the USA is rising across the board. And
it's not just housing, gasoline, heating, transportation, health care and
education. The cost of that most basic of all necessities - food - is now also
quickly rising for American workers and their families.

Last year's elections
in Nigeria saw fraud on a scale never seen before. This has severely undermined
the authority of the government in the eyes of the masses, so much so that the
judiciary are now overturning some of the results. This has led to illusions
that the judiciary is now a friend of democracy and even "revolutionary".
Nothing could be further from the truth.
