The PSOE has won a decisive general election victory after a heated and
bitter campaign in which the right wing Popular Party mobilized the forces of
reaction, using language that was reminiscent of the period before the Civil
War in the 1930s. Alan Woods in Madrid looks at the meaning of this result.

On February 29 the Karachi regional
conference of the Pakistani Marxists was held with 350 present, their biggest
ever gathering. At the meeting there was a balance sheet of the recent election
campaign and we reproduce here the speeches of the comrades who stood for
parliament, Lund,
Wazi and Manzoor.

We received this report with some delay, but we believe it
is important as it shows how the PTUDC is sinking roots inside the labour
movement in this important part of the Sindh region, gaining the support of 19
trade unions.

The idea of guaranteed quotas
for women on trade union and party committees has become fashionable. But there
are no shortcut solutions to this problem. Inequality exists because of
capitalism and will continue to exist as long as capitalism exists. This
inequality can only be fought by a united struggle of the whole labour
movement. Only when capitalism is abolished and a system of democratic planning
introduced will we be able to create the material basis for all inequality and
prejudice to whither away once and for all.

Tomorrow is International Women's Day. Although governments and
political parties around the world pay lip service to women's
liberation, the liberation of women remains elusive. Barbara Humphries,
long-term labour movement activist and Marxist, spoke on Wednesday
evening at the ULU Marxist Society in London on the origins of International
Women's Day, the necessity for capitalism to divide society on the
basis of sex and how the emergence of class society made women
second-class citizens.

On February 23 three comrades of the International Marxist
Tendency attended the Republican Socialist Youth Movement's (RSYM) winter day
school in Belfast.
Jim Daly, Sean McGowan and Bernadette McAliskey spoke on various aspects on the
question of Republicanism and Socialism and the role of the working class.
Francesco Merli spoke on Venezuela.
There was keen interest in the ideas of Marxism and the school bodes well for
the development of the RSYM. A HOV speaker also took part in this year’s Connolly Festival on February 22 and 23, while Labour Youth organized another talk on Venezuela in Galway with a speaker from HOV on February 26.

In
1972 Nixon, the US
president, visited China
for talks, the contents of which were kept secret. Ted Grant exposed the
shameless behaviour of Stalinist China and Russia who engaged in power
politics with imperialism and at the same time launching bitter attacks against
each other. What a change in comparison to the approach to diplomacy defended
by Lenin and Trotsky.

The situation in the USA is one of increasing crises. The wars in
Iraq and Afghanistan continue to trail on, costing nearly $275 million per
day. The situation at home is one of increasing unemployment and continual
crisis in the housing and credit markets. US workers will be called on to
go to the polls to elect a party of big business, but this era of crises will
only serve to cause more people to question the world in which they live.

Alan Woods was invited to speak at Eton, the most
prestigious private school in Britain
(known as a "public" school in English), by the school's Orwell Society. Alan
gave a very clear explanation of why society needs to be changed and why the
only direction it can go in is socialism. We believe the points raised and the
answers given provide a very good outline of what Marxism stands for today.

The assassination of Raúl Reyes and 18 other FARC guerrillas
exposes the real intentions of the Colombian state and the US government.
With this massacre, the Uribe government and American imperialism aim to derail
the negotiations over the release of hostages and thus deny any peace in Colombia, and at the same time prepare for more acts of
aggression against the unfolding revolution in Venezuela
and Ecuador.

El asesinato de Raúl Reyes y 18 guerrilleros de la FARC pone al descubierto, una vez más, la política del estado colombiano y del gobierno de Uribe de impedir cualquier salida pacífica al conflicto con la guerrilla.

The recent dramatic events in the Gaza
strip are a clear indication that the Zionist ruling class that governs Israel will
never concede genuine national self-determination to the Palestinian masses.
These events also confirm that on a capitalist basis there is no solution to
the problem. On the Palestinian side neither Hamas nor Fatah offer a solution.
We must base ourselves on the perspective of renewed class struggle across the
whole of the Middle East.

In an early morning attack on March 1, 2008 Colombian military forces
made an incursion into Ecuadorian territory and murdered several
FARC-EP guerrillas, including spokesperson Raúl Reyes. The goal of this
operation was to undermine the progress that had been made with
Colombia’s government and the FARC-EP as a result of Chávez’s mediation
efforts.
