Anyone
who doubted the wider implication for civil liberties of Blair’s ‘anti-terror’
legislation need look no further than the Labour Party Conference in Brighton.

The
recent announcement that the Provisional IRA had decommissioned all its weapons
has been drowned out by the blasts of the loyalist paramilitaries using theirs.
The Good Friday Agreement is dead. Instead of peace we have a dramatic increase
in extreme sectarian violence. More than ever the call for working class unity
in the struggle for socialism is the only answer. |

Iraq is in flames like never before. The iconic scenes which we saw in Basra last week
reminded us once more of the dreadful state of affairs in Iraq. Now
the south is in a mess too. Imperialist troops cannot bring peace. Pull them
out now!

The “The Iranian
workers are not alone” campaign has come under attack from unscrupulous
elements within Iran who are clearly worried about the echo the campaign is
having. We call on all our readers and supporters to step up the campaign. Let
the workers in Iran know that the workers of the world are with them! |

Over the weekend Israeli
aircraft have been involved in bombing the Gaza Strip. Israel has withdrawn its troops on the ground but it can bomb
the area any time it wants. It shows how false were the ideas of those who
claimed withdrawal from Gaza was a step towards a solution to the conflict. |

In August 20,000 youth from five continents travelled
to Venezuela to attend the XVI World Festival of
Youth and Students. This article has been put together on the basis of reports

In the recent
elections in Norway the Norwegian working class did not vote for
this or that party, or this or that electoral alliance. It voted against unemployment,
against cutbacks and against privatisation of public welfare. The
amazing thing is that although Norway is a debt-free country we have the same policies of
cuts in welfare and attacks on working conditions as everywhere else in the world. |

In the recent Norwegian elections the right-wing
Bondevik government suffered a devastating defeat. Now the left parties have a
chance to offer an alternative. The problem is that the Norwegian Social
Democracy is dominated by a Blairite pro-business leadership. The workers voted
for change but will they get it? |
