There is clearly a conflict between Hamas
and the Palestinian Authority. Sharon has an interest in fomenting this further
as a divided Palestinian community would be much easier to control. In the past
Israel backed the formation of Hamas as a counterweight to the PLO. Now the
opposite is the case and Israel is leaning on the PLO to curb the influence of
Hamas.

Upwards of 40,000 people are thought to have died and
hundreds of thousands injured in Pakistan, northern India, and Kashmir as a
result of the earthquake that hit the region Saturday morning. The devastation
caused by the quake has exposed the rottenness of the Musharraf regime and has
left millions stranded with no shelter, food or water. |

We have just received this urgent appeal from the comrades in Pakistan. The terrible earthquake that has devastated the north of Pakistan and India has had its worst effects in Kashmir. As if the inhabitants of this oppressed land had not suffered enough, nature has now inflicted an appalling calamity that falls heaviest on the poorest sections of society. We are calling on our readers to give as generously as possible to the special appeal that we have launched today. |

“I Ask the Night” is a translation of
selected poems by Javed Shaheen, the famous Pakistani poet, published by

This letter gives a glimpse of life in
westernised, capitalist Latvia. Wealth at one end of society, while 70% of the population is
classed as poor.

Over one
million workers and youth participated in the mass demonstrations during the
national day of action in France on October 4, in which some 100 000 marched in
Paris. This new high point in the recent history of the workers’ movement is a
further indication of the explosive social and political situation that exists
in France. The day of action, which included public sector strikes, was
supported by all the main trade union organisations. |

In June 58 working class
families, most of them North African immigrants, were forcibly evicted from their
homes in Sassuolo (northern Italy) to make room for speculative development.
They either owned or were legally renting their homes. With the help of the
Italian Marxists they are fighting back on a grand scale.

Yet again, the BC
Liberal Government has removed the democratic right of employees to
strike. From the UBC TAs, to the ferry
workers and hospital employees, workers’ rights and public programs are coming
under constant attack. Now the Liberals
plan to use BC’s teachers as their next layer of cannon fodder. On October 7, 42 000 public school teachers
will illegally walk the line in defence of their right to collectively bargain,
to go on strike and to save education for BC’s youth. Fightback stands together with the striking teachers.

After years
of so-called consensus politics the Belgian workers have had enough of longer
hours, cuts in welfare, speed-ups and they are coming out tomorrow in a massive
general strike. The mood is one of bitter anger and determination to win.

In the last five
years, gas prices in Canada have soared from about 65-cents per litre to
over $1.10. This price hike hits the
working class hardest. While the right
wing are trying to blame taxes for the increase, the majority of Canadians see
that corporate super-profits are the real culprit. In a recent
poll, 49% of Canadians (and 67% of Quebecers) support nationalizing the oil
industry. |
