We provide this report of the book
launch meeting of Lal Khan’s book Kashmir’s Ordeal – A
Revolutionary Way Out. At the peak of the meeting nearly 1000
people were present, who had come to hear Alan Woods and Lal Khan
speak on the question of Kashmir. As one comrade said afterwards, the
meeting will turn out to be an important turning point and milestone
in the struggle for a socialist Kashmir. Picture gallery available.

On February 22, the Chinese government shut down the China Workers' Website
and Discussion Lists, a website that allowed Chinese workers and farmers to
discuss their struggles and the problems they face. The developments and changes
in China are of extreme significance for workers and youth of the whole world
and in this regard, this interview, conducted by Stephen Philion for the Monthly
Review Magazine, is
extremely interesting and important, and provides an insight into the conditions
of the Chinese workers, youth and peasants.

On Monday March 27, the British Channel
4 screened a documentary on Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez that can only be described as scandalous.
Unfortunately this is not just an isolated
incident, but part of a more general and concerted effort to spread
half-truths and open lies about Chavez with the aim of preparing
world public opinion for “regime change” in Venezuela.

Venezuela.

The move to the left that we workers
are experiencing will be sooner or later reflected in the United
States. The revolutions and insurrections we are seeing in Latin
America, particularly in Venezuela and Bolivia, not only inspired the
movements we are seeing at the moment in Los Angeles, they also mark
a new period in the class struggle.

As we reported, French workers and students took to the
streets on Tuesday, March 28, in a massive way. The only way the
workers and youth can move forward to victory and avoid falling into
tiredness and disappointment, is by declaring a proper and effective
general strike aimed not only at the withdrawal of the Contrat
Première Embauche but also at the unseating of the current
government, which has by far overrun its mandate.

When Blair was first
elected he promised his government would be ‘whiter than white’,
a phrase meant to distance himself from the sleaze of the Major
years. Now Blair is immersed in sleaze himself. From the lies over
the Iraq war we now have the scandal of selling peerages to the
biggest bidder. Blair has done his utmost to destroy the Labour
Party. It will be up to the trade unions and the ranks of the party
to rebuild it as a fighting workers’ organisation.

The US Navy will be sending four ships, one of them carrying 60 fighter
planes, and a total of 6,500 soldiers on a major military exercise in
the Caribbean starting in the next few weeks. This can only be interpreted as a threat and as a concrete preparation for
future military intervention against the Venezuelan relvolution.

We have just been informed that yesterday the Greek government has withdrawn
from its plans to close the plant in Thessaloniki. They say it will reopen
"partially". This is a big victory for the workers after two months of
determined struggle. For now the solidarity appeal is suspended as we await the
outcome.

clases.

Kadima, the new party
founded by Sharon, has emerged as the first party in the Israeli
parliament, the Knesset, but it will have to govern in a coalition.
No party has an outright majority. Now the new Labour leadership has
indicated it would serve in such a coalition. This means accepting
anti-working class policies. In these conditions the Labour Party
will come under immense pressure from the bosses and the workers,
pulling in opposite directions.

In the
biggest strike since the historic general strike of 1926, over a
million local government workers struck in defence of their pensions
yesterday, March 28th. The mood on the picket lines was
cheerful, buoyant and confident in what was undoubtedly the largest
and most solid public sector strike ever in Britain.

Today’s
strikes and demonstrations brought over three million workers onto
the streets of France, with 700,000 marchers in Paris and 250,000 in
Marseille. In the last 60 years, this movement has only been equalled
by those of the revolutionary events of May and June 1968. It is
provoking serious divisions right at the top of the ruling class, a
clear symptom of revolutionary developments.

Another massive general strike rocked
Greek society on March 15. This came about in a situation of growing
class conflict. The result has been a big fall in support for the
present right wing New Democracy government. The Greek bosses are now
openly discussing the possibility of French contagion in Greece.
