The much vaunted ‘smooth transition’ from Blair to Brown
would not imply any policy change whatsoever. Consequently, Blair’s replacement
by Brown would propel Labour further along the course to losing the next
election. What is required is a socialist candidate.

The new leader of the Tories has suddenly become very
interested in reducing individual donations to political parties. In reality
what lies behind this is an attempt to cut trade union funding to the Labour
Party and replace it with public funding.

This latest of Ken Loach’s films is well crafted and well
thought. It has been thoroughly researched and really gets under the surface of
the processes and the events that helped shape the current situation on the island of Ireland.

The recent referendum in Montenegro
produced a majority for separation from Serbia, but this small country
remains seriously divided. In reality there is no “independence”, but a small
nation prey to the whims of imperialism.

The strength of the Greek student movement has been truly
amazing in these recent weeks. It forced even the conservative bureaucracy of
the trade unions to organise a solidarity strike with the students. In the mass
assemblies the students concluded that there should now be a pause and the
movement should prepare to remobilise in September.

The pendulum of the class struggle,
which has been swinging mercilessly against working people for the past
twenty-five years, is starting to swing the other way, with the beginnings
of a fight back by the working class. The period we have entered may
well be far more similar to the turbulent 1930s than the relatively
stable post-war period.

The Scottish Socialist
Party is being torn apart by an internal wrangle that was sparked off back in
2004 by a dispute between its leading figure, Tommy Sheridan, and the News of the World newspaper about his personal life. All
genuine socialists back the SSP against attacks by the state, but questions
need to be asked of why the party has reached this sorry state.

socialismo.

The first demand of the international labour movement, and of the Israeli working class, must be for the immediate withdrawal of the troops that were sent into Gaza overnight. Stop this present incursion now! And from there begin the struggle to transform society and put an end to the class and national divisions which are at the heart of the present conflict. |

On June 18, a referendum was held in Catalonia (Spain) on the new Estatut. A big majority voted “yes” but the level of abstention was very high, with only 49.5% turning out on the day. Abstention was particularly high in the working class areas. The massive “yes” vote was more a vote against the right-wing PP than an enthusiastic vote for the Estatut itself. |

The Israeli Defence Force has amassed tanks and troops on the border with the Gaza Strip as the crisis over a kidnapped soldier deepens. For some time anyone who understands the mechanical logic of the Israeli government and its plans to reoccupy the Gaza Strip has known that the Israeli government has simply been looking for an excuse to move back in. |

When Mussolini was removed by a palace coup in July 1943 the masses came out onto the streets, rejoicing at the fall of the hated dictator. Ted Grant wrote an article shortly after those events stressing that this was the beginning of the revolution in Italy and beyond. |

Ted Grant in 1943 analyses the origins of Italian fascism, how it came to power and then how it lost its base of support within society, leading finally to the fall of Mussolini and stresses the need to support the revolutionary struggle of the Italian workers. |
