In the light of recent developments in the Scottish
Socialist Party (SSP) we are publishing a document written by Ted Grant back in
1992 which already outlined the roots of the present crisis in the SSP. Ted
explained that the concessions the leaders of the then SML (later to become
SSP) were making to Scottish nationalism would lead to a disaster. Time has
proven him correct.

The SSP is now split after a bitter, dog-eat-dog faction fight involving
the supporters of Sheridan and McCombes. There are no principled differences
between these camps. This is a battle of personalities over the leadership of
the party. Yet beneath these clashes the root causes of the crisis are indeed to
be found in politics. They spring, above all, from the abandonment of Marxism.
Once they had set off down this path, making concessions to nationalism and
reformism, there was never any other final destination than
crisis.

situation and its most advanced point is in the state of Oaxaca. The Marxist
Tendency "Militante", part of the International Marxist Tendency, has
been involved in these struggles from the very beginning and is now one of a
number of organisations being targeted for repression by the state. Urgent
international solidarity is needed.

There the mass movement has thrown up the Popular Assembly of the People of
Oaxaca (APPO), an organ of workers’ power. The dilemma is now posed of how this
much more advanced expression of revolutionary struggle should relate to the
National Democratic Convention (CND) - participate and push the latter forward
or stay out and remain isolated?

político más desarrollado a nivel nacional, para decirlo claramente en
la ciudad de Oaxaca existe un proceso revolucionario, que ha llevado
al poder a la APPO, si bien es cierto que este poder aún se tiene que
perfeccionar y extender al conjunto del estado, es un echo que el
estado burgués no tiene el poder en la ciudad, y que la autoridad de la
APPO hasta dentro de sectores de la policía es más decisivo que la
autoridad de la burguesía.

The Israeli government and military failed in their declared
objectives in the recent conflict in Lebanon. Israeli society is under
shock as a result. Now while they say a new war needs to prepared, the
government is preparing vicious attacks on social spending. This will
inevitably prepare class conflict at some stage. Meanwhile on the Arab street
the desire for a genuine left alternative is becoming evident.

 Exactly one year ago, the winds and waters of yet another hurricane crashed
into the Gulf Coast of the United States. But this was no "routine"
tropical storm. This was Hurricane Katrina - a Category 5 killer which swept
away levees, homes, communities, memories, and 1,577 lives. Katrina and its
aftermath also swept away the illusions of millions in the US and around the world: it was a
savage reminder that all is not well in the proverbial "land of milk and
honey".
