On 6 April, the Egyptian working class organised a general strike, which was accompanied by mass upheaval. This was the continuation of several extraordinary mass mobilisations against the dictatorship, exploitation and starvation and constitutes the largest movement in Egypt for 50 years. Faced with these mobilisations, the regime has launched a campaign of brutal repression against the workers and activists, using all means of repression, including the arrest of hundreds of striking workers as well as protesters. Some media outlets have stated that the Attorney General of Egypt has investigated some 300 people in Mahal and Kobra. Amongst these 51 were injured. There are also more prisoners in other cities. The bourgeois media, without exception, has been absolutely silent on these events. Union workers, as well as left-wing activists, have been accused with very serious charges, which will surely mean severe prison sentences. These workers and activists are now suffering from torture, starvation, and above all humiliation. Workers in the Arab world, the Middle East and of the whole world, left-wing and trade union activists, revolutionary students and youth, we must organise a massive solidarity campaign to show the dictatorship in Egypt strongly and clearly that our brothers and sisters, the workers and oppressed of Egypt, are not alone. We must show the regime that we support the workers and stand in solidarity with their demands and struggle, and that we will not stand for these arrests nor their humiliation. We must organise solidarity activities in our trade unions and left parties, at our universities and schools, and in the workers' districts. Break the wall of silence around the treatment of these workers, their struggles and their conditions! Send solidarity letters to them and their militant trade union and political organisations and to progressive websites which have played an important role in these mobilisations! Send protest letters to the Egyptian authorities, consulates and embassies! Organise sit-ins in front of the Egyptian consulates and embassies! Keep up the pressure by any means possible to demand the immediate release of prisoners! Workers of the world, unite! Monday, 7 April, 2008 |
