Venezuela two years after the coup - "Deepen the revolution, advance towards socialism" Print E-mail
By Jorge Martin
Tuesday, 27 April 2004
Two years after the brief April 2002 coup, Venezuela is still living through an unfinished revolutionary process. The masses of the people and the workers have defeated the counterrevolutionary conspiracies of the local oligarchy and imperialism twice, but the revolution has not been completed and thus the danger of a new reactionary coup is still ever present.

Counterrevolutionary offensive in Venezuela - Mass mobilisation, the only way to defeat the counterrevolution Print E-mail
By Miguel Campos (El Militante – Venezuela)
Saturday, 15 November 2003
There have been increasing rumours in the last few days of a fresh coup attempt in Venezuela. According to pro-government members of parliament, there is strong evidence that the CIA and the leaders of the counterrevolutionary opposition are preparing plans to try and overthrow President Chavez once again. In response, the government has put the army on full alert, however, in our opinion, the best way to counter any further coup attempts is by mobilising the workers and masses of Venezuela, the very people who defeated the first coup attempt back in April 2002.

Last August 1 and 2, Caracas was a hive of activity. Large delegations of workers, with high expectations and a joyful mood, filled the main room of the Parque Central complex. There were more than 1200 delegates present at the First Congress of the National Workers' Union (Unión Nacional Trabajadores - UNT).

The Venezuelan people responds - Here is your referendum! Print E-mail
By Hermann Albrecht, El Militante - Venezuela
Monday, 18 August 2003
Chanting this as one of the main slogans, hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans flooded the streets of Caracas on August 23, to once again demonstrate their support for the government of President Hugo Chávez and his movement known as the "Bolivarian Revolution". It was an important reply to the latest parody that Venezuelan reaction had been trying to build up in the days prior to the demonstration. They had just handed their fraudulent list of signatures, with which they are trying to get a referendum called against Chávez, to the National Elections Council (CNE).

Venezuela: the revolution faced with economic sabotage Print E-mail
By Miguel Campos (El Militante – Venezuela)
Saturday, 28 June 2003
The situation in Venezuela continues to be marked by a balance of forces favourable to the revolution, which still enjoys massive support among the popular masses. On the other hand, the counterrevolutionary opposition is not dead: it uses all possible tactics with the aim of destabilising and sabotaging the government of Hugo Chavez and thus undermining the social base of the revolution.

Venezuela a year after the coup - The red tide floods Bolivar Avenue once again Print E-mail
By Jorge Martín
Thursday, 24 April 2003
Hundreds of thousands gathered in Bolivar Avenue, Caracas, on April 13 to commemorate the first anniversary of the popular uprising that defeated the reactionary coup of April 11, 2002. The different events that have been taking place a year after the coup give us a clear picture of the current balance of forces between the classes in Venezuela.

The defeat of the bosses lock out and the sabotage of the oil industry deepens the revolutionary process in Venezuela Print E-mail
By Jorge Martin
Wednesday, 26 February 2003
On Thursday February 20 at midnight, the Venezuelan police arrested the president of the bosses’ organisation Fedecamaras Carlos Fernandez, accused of five different charges: betrayal to the fatherland, rebellion, instigation to crime, association to commit crime, and devastation. This action of the justice system reflects clearly the pressure of the revolutionary movement and the new balance of forces after the complete failure of the attempted coup.

Venezuela: Opposition "strike" or bosses lock out? - An eyewitness account Print E-mail
By Jorge Martin
Thursday, 23 January 2003
If we were to believe the information we get from the mass media internationally, we would get the impression that in Venezuela there has been a general strike for the last one and a half months and that president Chavez is an extremely unpopular and authoritarian ruler who is about to be overthrown in a mass popular revolt. Nothing could be further from the truth. The working class of Venezuela is not taking part in any general strike. What is taking place is a bosses' lock out.

Venezuela between revolution and counterrevolution Print E-mail
By Alan Woods
Tuesday, 10 December 2002
The reports from Venezuela indicate a sharpening of the struggle between the contending forces. The revolutionary camp must be on its guard against provocateurs who have undoubtedly infiltrated themselves into the mass movement, with a view to causing disorder and panic. Their aim is to drag the mass movement into futile armed conflicts that can end with a large number of casualties. This is the main aim of the counterrevolutionaries. That is why the ideas of "foquism" and individual terrorism are so harmful to the movement. The groups that advocate such tactics are very easily infiltrated by the police and secret services and manipulated for sinister purposes. It is necessary to firmly oppose all adventurist tactics that put the whole movement at risk. The way to defeat the counterrevolution is not through individual shoot-outs but through the actions of the masses themselves.

Venezuela - the ruling class is preparing a new coup Print E-mail
By Emilia Lucena from El Militante
Wednesday, 04 December 2002
Once again the Venezuelan bourgeoisie is trying to put an end to the revolutionary process which has opened up in Venezuela. After the failure of the coup on April 13, a new coup is being openly and shamelessly prepared by the oligarchy with the backing of US imperialism. They have now called for an indefinite bosses' lock out until Chavez and his government resign. The working class must go on the offensive! Against the bosses' lock-out, workers' control of the factories!

Venezuela: The revolution at the point of no return Print E-mail
By Alan Woods
Wednesday, 04 September 2002
The revolution in Venezuela has reached the point of no return. In two stormy days in April, the bourgeoisie attempted a coup d'etat against the reformist government of Hugo Chavez. Although it was backed by big business, right-wing trade union leaders and the US embassy, the coup failed. In just 36 hours the whole thing was over.

Venezuela at the crossroads Print E-mail
By Emilia Lucena from El Militante

On June 29 a million and a half workers marched on the streets of Caracas to show their support for the government and to warn reaction that "if there is a new A11 there will be a new A13" (in reference to the coup and counter-coup in Venezuela in April). The stories and pictures of the demonstration leave no room for doubt: the Venezuelan working class is ready to fight against reaction.

Revolution and Counter-Revolution in Venezuela Print E-mail
By Alan Woods and Ted Grant
Sunday, 14 April 2002
Dramatic events are unfolding in Venezuela. On Saturday April 13, less than 36 hours after a group of right-wing businessmen and army generals had assumed control, the coup collapsed in a welter of confusion. Shortly after 10 pm, interim President Pedro Carmona Estanga resigned and was reportedly under arrest. Vice President Diosdado Cabello, who was sworn in as president by National Assembly President William Lara after Carmona was forced to reinstate the assembly's elected members and other public officials he fired on April 12. Finally, amidst scenes of wild rejoicing, Hugo Chávez, having been flown by military helicopter to the Miraflores Presidential palace, was reinstated as President of Venezuela.

The lock-out staged by the Venezuelan capitalists on 10th December 2001 against the laws introduced by President Hugo Chavez has raised the level of class conflict within this Latin American country to heights not seen in the three years since the latter won elections with 56% of the popular vote, in the teeth of opposition from the imperialists and key sectors of the Venezuelan ruling class.
