Cahaya: new Indonesian Marxist paper

We publish here the first edition of a new Marxist paper in Indonesia called Cahaya.

Cahaya, means "shining light" or "bright light". It has been produced by a group of young Marxists active in the Indonesian workers and student movement. It has the ambition to become the socialist voice of workers, poor peasants and young people. We hope that the policies explained in its pages will become the dominant ideas of the Indonesian left. We consider the publication of Cahaya an important contribution to the necessary process of clarification and discussion between different left forces.. The aim of this process is to unite and to assemble the forces able to develop a correct Marxist strategy and program for the Indonesian and the international socialist revolution.

This program and strategy must serve to give the necessary working class leadership to the mass struggle which is developing since the overthrow of Suharto in 1998.

This edition of Cahaya contains articles on the prospects for socialism in Indonesia, the new developments in the Trade Union movement and how to win workers for socialist ideas, elements of a Marxist approach to the National Question in Indonesia, Questions and Answers on Globalisation, the relationship between the new president Megawati and the military and a short presentation of the revolutionary fighter and theoretician Leon Trotsky.
