Although still in its early stages,
there is clearly a reawakening of the Russian working class taking place with a
growing number of strikes taking place. Once this picks up steam at some later
stage it will cut across all the confusion and demoralisation that have been
dominant features in the past.

An example of a very militant strike in Severouralsk, one of a series in the
recent period. The miners were determined but the bosses were ruthless. This
experience is another indication of growing working class militancy in Russia.

We provide an interesting
interview with Moscow
train drivers who were recently on strike, that reveals the terrible conditions
imposed on the workers but also the militant mood of the organizers.

The dramatic events that have unfolded in the recent period
in Lebanon
have hidden a very important development. As Hezbollah moved into West Beirut they successfully cut across a general strike
over wages that was planned for the same day. As the workers were coming
together to fight for their common interests, Hezbollah pushed its own agenda,
thereby heightening ethnic tension.

Hezbollah went into Beirut
and came out again once the government had backed off on its plans to dismantle
its communications network. Although powerful, the Hezbollah leaders are only
interested in maintaining their share of power. They are not interested, and
are incapable of, solving the real problems facing the masses.

Up till recently, Britain’s main high street banks had
not seemed to have suffered much – they were all announcing big profits and
there was little talk of large ‘writedowns’ of worthless assets. But now the
Royal Bank of Scotland has announced that it lost £4bn in the last three months
as a result of the world’s great credit crunch and it must write off £5bn in
loans and debt securities that it had on its books as worthless. The credit
crunch is going to hit Britain in a big way.

work stoppages since the Labour government came to power 10 years ago, with up
to 400,000 public sector employees going on strike." (Reuters: Headline and

New Labour suffered a humiliating defeat in the recent
local elections, but those left groupings who were hoping to capitalise on
Labour's difficulties also found themselves in a mess. As Ted Grant explained,
the working class always ignore these sectarian grouplets on the fringes of the
labour movement and in times of struggle always turn towards their
traditional organisations.

According to reports received from Shush city around 5000
workers are now on strike at the Haft Tapeh Sugar Cane Development Commercial
Company. The strike has entered its sixth day and all three shifts, as well as
all parts of the factory and cane fields of the company, are solidly behind the

Dra.

The Movement of the Occupied Factories in Brazil is a
glorious chapter in the struggle of the working class. Last year the courts and
the police intervened in an attempt to smash the movement. In spite of
everything it still survives at the Flaskô plastics factory in Sumaré, Sao Paulo. Here we
provide an account of the struggle of the Flaskô workers and background to the
movement as a whole.

In the summer of 1939, the Tientsin incident unleashed a
nationalistic outburst in defence of British prerogatives over China. Labour
and Stalinist leaders advocated for a "firm" defence of British interests and China against Japan. Ted Grant vehemently
rejected their chauvinism and warned "We cannot trust the British capitalists
to carry out any act in the interests of the workers of Britain and the
world."

Opposition students in Venezuela are depicted as poor
victims of an authoritarian regime. The world media pick up on this and repeat
the fairy tale until people start to believe it. But these students are such
victims that they receive hundreds of thousands of dollars in the form of the
"Milton Friedman Liberty Prize". Friedman's Chicago Boys were also
advisers to Pinochet, no doubt also seen as a "victim" by these people.
