Panic
has gripped the stock markets of the world. Things are completely out
of control, and there is nothing that governments can say or do that
can stop it. As in 1929, every time people thought that the worst had
come, further falls were just round the corner. Nobody knows how far
share prices have still to go. The world economy now finds itself in
unsheltered waters.

Millions of US
families are being threatened with eviction from their homes, some because they
cannot pay their mortgages and others because their landlords cannot pay
theirs. Now a County Sheriff in Illinois, has refused to carry out any more
evictions.

As a result of the economic and social convulsions, many people are beginning to question the nature of the capitalist system. But does Marxism offer an alternative in todays world? Is there still a class struggle? Or are we all middle class now? Many people are disgusted by the huge salaries of big business, but does this mean they are in favour of socialism? Yesterday Alan Woods answered these questions at a ULU Marxist Society meeting in London with an audience of 25.

In 1971 in Britain the Tory
government's the Industrial Relations Bill brought the country
close to a general strike with many militants calling for concrete
action. The Communist Party first called for such a strike and then
light-mindedly dropped it without any explanation. Ted Grant pointed
out that in the conditions of the time the call for a general strike
had to go hand in hand with systematic preparation for power;
otherwise it would be a frivolous and dangerous approach.

"Neoliberalism", sometimes called "market
fundamentalism", i.e. the policy of non-intervention by the state in
the economy, has been the dominant ideology of the bourgeoisie for close to
three decades, involving widespread privatisation and all the
other policies that go with it. The present economic meltdown,
however, is forcing governments to intervene, regulate, and even
nationalise firms because they have no choice. So is "neoliberalism"
dead?

It was not the immediate crisis on Wall Street that has “caused” the public outrage against the Big Business bail out. This was only the “straw that broke the camel’s back.” This has simply brought to the surface deep-seated discontent that had been brewing for years.

In the early hours of this morning (08.10.08), the government and the financial authorities have finally agreed an ambitious plan to save the banks. They present the £50bn bail-out as decisive action to stop the rot. In fact their hands were forced, and there’s no sign that it will stem the panic on UK stock markets in any case.

Yesterday saw an impressive show of
solidarity for the Miami Five in front of the US embassy at London's
Grosvenor Square. About five hundred people turned up to the annual
candlelit vigil organised by the Cuba Solidarity Campaign in Britain.
Hands Off Venezuela joined the protest, which marked the 10th
anniversary of the arrest of these five courageous men.

A British Army brigadier recently admitted what we said long ago on the pages of this website: a military victory over the Taliban was “neither feasible nor supportable”. Neither side is winning and this is pushing the more realistic and serious minded strategists of capital to look at other solutions, a deal of some kind. Meanwhile the ordinary people continue to suffer.

In the words of Alan Greenspan, “The crisis will mean a return to the ideological struggle between socialism and capitalism. Many of us thought that struggle was over with the collapse of the command economies, but this is not the case.” Reality is indeed coming home with a bang!

Ireland has been hit hard by the credit
crunch. The country has gone from one of the highest rates of growth
to bust. The government is being forced to intervene with guarantees,
but as could be expected they are aimed at sustaining the rich not
the ordinary working people.

What caused this financial crisis? Whilst the collapse of house prices was the straw that broke the camel’s back, this requires that it was already heavily laden with straw. Marxists understand that historical events don’t occur in a vacuum; rather, they are a result of the build up of contradictions within the system.

On Wednesday around 100 people gathered
in Bolívar Hall in London to attend what was a very successful
launch of the English language edition of Alan Woods' latest book,
Reformism or Revolution - A Reply to Heinz Dieterich. The
debate revealed that as capitalism world enters into a deep crisis,
the ideas of genuine socialism are alive and well. Now is the time to
spread the ideas of revolutionary socialism. (Including the audio file of Alan Woods' speech).
