The assassination of Raúl Reyes and 18 other FARC guerrillas
exposes the real intentions of the Colombian state and the US government.
With this massacre, the Uribe government and American imperialism aim to derail
the negotiations over the release of hostages and thus deny any peace in Colombia, and at the same time prepare for more acts of
aggression against the unfolding revolution in Venezuela
and Ecuador.

El asesinato de Raúl Reyes y 18 guerrilleros de la FARC pone al descubierto, una vez más, la política del estado colombiano y del gobierno de Uribe de impedir cualquier salida pacífica al conflicto con la guerrilla.

The recent dramatic events in the Gaza
strip are a clear indication that the Zionist ruling class that governs Israel will
never concede genuine national self-determination to the Palestinian masses.
These events also confirm that on a capitalist basis there is no solution to
the problem. On the Palestinian side neither Hamas nor Fatah offer a solution.
We must base ourselves on the perspective of renewed class struggle across the
whole of the Middle East.

A very successful first public meeting of El Militante Bolivia was held on
February 28 in Potosí with 35 people taking part, some of whom expressed an
interest in joining El Militante. All this while the city was erupting in mass
rioting in protest against economic sabotage being carried out by the
oligarchy.

In an early morning attack on March 1, 2008 Colombian military forces
made an incursion into Ecuadorian territory and murdered several
FARC-EP guerrillas, including spokesperson Raúl Reyes. The goal of this
operation was to undermine the progress that had been made with
Colombia’s government and the FARC-EP as a result of Chávez’s mediation
efforts.

Officially
Putin's right hand man, Medvedev, has won the Presidential elections with over
70% of the vote on a turnout of more than 70%. But no one seriously believes
this. Many Russians have commented on the meaninglessness of the elections.
Putin will remain the boss. However, for all the pomp that surrounds Putin
there is a strong undercurrent of hatred against capitalism. The fact that the
CPRF yet again showed that it is the only opposition to the Kremlin, confirms
this.

As
background the Presidential elections we publish an analysis of the December
parliamentary elections. These reflected political consolidation following on
from economic stabilization after the financial crisis of 1998. These new
relations are now in turn leading to a reaction. The modest gains of the CPRF
reveal both the potential for an organized opposition to Russian capitalism and
the path that this opposition will take in the mass organizations.

We have received a very
interesting interview with A. Etmanov, the leader of the trade union of Ford (Saint Petersburg). This
reveals many things, not just about the Ford strike but about the state of the
Russian workers' movement, the struggle of the trade unions and their attitude
towards capitalism and the political parties.

The murder of Benazir
Bhutto and the rigged elections in Pakistan have opened up a period of
turmoil in the country. The wars in Iraq
and Afghanistan
have caused an unprecedented instability that is undermining an already shaky
equilibrium. The whole region could catch fire as classes come into conflict.
Here is an appraisal of the situation in the Editor's note of the upcoming
issue of the Asian Marxist Review.

At the beginning of
February the Esquerda Marxista (Marxist Left) group in Brazil held its
congress, where they unanimously voted in favour of their affiliation to the
International Marxist Tendency. The addition of this important grouping, which
gathers within its ranks leaders of the occupied factories, of the Black
Socialist Movement, important trade unionists and many revolutionary youth,
marks a major milestone in the building of a genuine Marxist International in
Latin America and the world.

In 1963 there were indications that a crisis was brewing in the USSR. Ted Grant
showed how the twists and turns of Kruschev's policies were empirical attempts
on the part of the Russian bureaucracy to reform the system in order to avoid
the possibility of a political revolution developing along the lines of Hungary 1956.

The magnificent wave of industrial action in
Egypt, which started over a year ago, is continuing. And it continues to be
ignored by the media. Price rises are the central focus of protest. But in a
very important development, at the Ghazl al Mahalla textile company have
raised political demands for the first time.
