The heavy-handed intervention of the army and police on Sunday managed to
block the general strike, but it has enraged the workers and youth who have
continued to protest.

The situation in Mahalla has become far more serious than
the media would lead us to believe. The police opened fire on the unarmed
demonstrating workers and killed at least four. Here we publish an appeal for
solidarity that we have received from Egypt.

After the defeat of
the Israeli army in Lebanon
two years ago, the Israeli Defence Forces have been trying to win back their
image as the only real defenders of the people in Israel. Now they are constantly
provoking Syria in the hope
that Syria
will hit back, something it seems unwilling to do.

Mahmoud Salehi, who was sentenced to prison for his role in trying to organise the 2004 May Day
rally in Saghez, was
finally released on Sunday. But we need to carry on the struggle for the
release of all trade unionists and labour activists in Iran!

Yesterday, Sunday, April 6, the workers of Egypt were
preparing for what could have been a very powerful general strike. The state
intervened heavily at the Mahalla textile plant arresting 150 workers. These
methods cannot stop the growing wave of working class militancy and will only
serve to increase the determination of the workers. The workers ‘intifada'
which erupted later that day in the city is proof of this.

A recent bulletin of the European Central Bank (ECB) dealt with the causes of recent increases in the rate of inflation within the "Eurozone". It is no surprise to find that what they are concerned about are wage increases. Like the high priests in the past they try to cover up reality and make us believe in a fantasy world.

We received this contribution on the situation in Venezuela. As
the comrade explains: "Here I want to give a brief and clear outline of the
revolutionary process which has been taking place in Venezuela starting from the point
where international powers recognised the great oil potential of the country."

In early 1945 the radical mood within the British
working class was preparing a landslide victory for the Labour Party. In this
context the I.L.P. leadership raised the idea of re-affiliation to the L.P.,
but gave no explanation for its 13 years of independent existence. Here Ted
Grant provided a sober-minded Marxist approach to the question of the Labour
Party and the mass organizations of the working class in general.

The second day of the congress saw more
than 2000 delegates, members and visitors registered. The enthusiasm of the first day was nothing
compared to the second. The discussions revealed a high level of understanding
of the tasks that lie ahead. The workers and youth who intervened showed that
the Marxist Tendency in Pakistan
has come a very long way since its early days in the 1980s.
